From The Lion’s Den
Will Gill
2020
Will Gill has created a body of artwork that stems from a month-long residency in The Tower studio through Fogo Island Arts in November 2017. Based primarily on his observations and experiences on Fogo Island, the work explores themes of renewal, migration, wonder and otherworldliness. Gill uses photography, charcoal + silk on canvas and sculpture to set up striking visual contrasts through colour, material, light and form, with the hope of inspiring imaginations and reflecting life in isolated areas.
The Lion’s Den is an isolated cove on Fogo Island that was voluntarilyresettled in the mid 1950’s. It was also the location for Gills photo shoot which tells the story of a family relocating back to a resettled community.
